This is my opportunity to preach a little to parents about the simple pleasure of drawing with their children. Drawing is a magical skill because it is a universal language that anyone can learn.
As most of us remember from our earliest school days, there was never any inhibition about splashing paint across a sheet of paper or making marks with a pencil. Sadly, many children eventually become self-conscious about what they draw or paint and simply stop. In doing so, they lose one of the most rewarding forms of visual expression.
So please draw with your children instead of automatically placing them in front of a television or tablet.
Try this: sit opposite one another at a table with an A4 sheet of paper and a pencil or pen, then draw each other’s portrait. It doesn’t matter whether the drawings are good or bad. You’ll laugh a lot, discover how closely you really observe one another, and, most importantly, spend time together creating something by hand.
